Abstract:

REDIES, la Red Costarricense de Instituciones Educativas Sostenibles, fue conformada en la Escuela de Agricultura de la Región del Trópico Húmedo (EARTH) en 2009. A la fecha (2023), 15 instituciones de educación superior y técnica constituyen los bloques basales de su constitución. A través de esta red se busca el compromiso continuo de las autoridades para alcanzar la sostenibilidad; ello, en aras de establecer alianzas estratégicas de intercambio y cooperación para promover y ejecutar acciones de sostenibilidad entre las instituciones miembros de la red y sus comunidades de acción e influencia. Para este informe anual, se reporta la realización de 11 reuniones del Comité Interinstitucional, que facilitaron la coordinación y cooperación entre las instituciones miembros. A nivel de gestión ambiental, se mantuvo un compromiso sólido con la implementación y el seguimiento de los indicadores de gestión ambiental. Este seguimiento ha permitido evaluar y mejorar continuamente las prácticas ambientales en las instituciones participantes. REDIES también lideró varias iniciativas y eventos de extensión importantes, incluyendo talleres regionales sobre sostenibilidad, participación en celebraciones de efemérides ambientales y campañas de reforestación, todas orientadas a fortalecer la educación y concienciación sobre sostenibilidad. La red participó activamente en foros y jornadas nacionales e internacionales, como el V Foro Iberoamericano de Universidades y Sostenibilidad, demostrando su papel creciente en la arena global de la educación para la sostenibilidad. Así como en proyectos de investigación como el diagnóstico del conocimiento, compromiso y aportes de las instituciones de educación superior a la Agenda 2030 liderado por el Observatorio de la Sustentabilidad en la Educación Superior de América Latina y el Caribe. Durante este año, REDIES continuó ampliando su red de alianzas estratégicas, colaborando con organizaciones regionales como la red ARIUSA, el Proyecto Residuos Electrónicos América Latina (PREAL) y la Secretaría de la Carta de la Tierra, así como organizaciones nacionales como el Consejo Nacional de Enseñanza Superior Privada (CONESUP), la Red Costarricense para la Disminución de Pérdida y Desperdicio de Alimentos. Esto amplió su impacto y reforzó su capacidad para promover prácticas sostenibles a través del intercambio y la cooperación. Con el trabajo conjunto y participativo de las instituciones educativas sostenibles, se han consolidado acciones que, año tras año, fortalecen la gestión ambiental institucional y aumentan el grado de influencia en miles de participantes de dichas instituciones. Con agrado, presentamos este informe que resume el trabajo realizado por las instituciones miembros de REDIES y sus aliados, durante el año 2023.

REDIES, the Costa Rican Network of Sustainable Educational Institutions, was formed at the School of Agriculture of the Humid Tropics Region (EARTH) in 2009. To date (2023), 15 higher and technical education institutions constitute the basic blocks of its constitution. Through this network, the continued commitment of authorities to achieving sustainability is sought, seeking to establish strategic alliances for exchange and cooperation to promote and implement sustainability actions among the network's member institutions and their communities of action and influence. This annual report includes 11 meetings of the Inter-Institutional Committee, which facilitated coordination and cooperation among member institutions. At the environmental management level, a strong commitment was maintained to the implementation and monitoring of environmental management indicators. This monitoring has allowed for the continuous evaluation and improvement of environmental practices at participating institutions. REDIES also led several important outreach initiatives and events, including regional workshops on sustainability, participation in environmental anniversary celebrations, and reforestation campaigns, all aimed at strengthening sustainability education and awareness. The network actively participated in national and international forums and conferences, such as the 5th Ibero-American Forum of Universities and Sustainability, demonstrating its growing role in the global arena of sustainability education. As well as in research projects such as the assessment of the knowledge, commitment, and contributions of higher education institutions to the 2030 Agenda, led by the Observatory of Sustainability in Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean. This year, REDIES continued to expand its network of strategic alliances, collaborating with regional organizations such as the ARIUSA network, the Latin American Electronic Waste Project (PREAL), and the Earth Charter Secretariat, as well as national organizations such as the National Council of Private Higher Education (CONESUP) and the Costa Rican Network for the Reduction of Food Loss and Waste. This broadened its impact and strengthened its capacity to promote sustainable practices through exchange and cooperation. Through the collaborative and participatory work of sustainable educational institutions, actions have been consolidated that, year after year, strengthen institutional environmental management and increase the degree of influence on thousands of participants in these institutions. We are pleased to present this report, which summarizes the work carried out by REDIES member institutions and their allies during 2023.
