Las científicas Jennifer Doudna y Emmanuelle Charpentier fueron galardonadas con el Premio Nobel de química, por sus aportaciones en descubrimientos que llevaron al planteamiento de una herramienta revolucionaria de edición del código genético, denominada CRISPR/CAS9. Esta técnica es tan novedosa que ha generado toda una serie de especulaciones sobre el poder que la humanidad ha adquirido al tener ahora la posibilidad de editar el código genético de manera similar (guardando las diferencias), a como se edita un escrito en un procesador de texto. La historia es narrada de manera amena y comprensible por Walter Isaacson en su libro “The code breaker (“El código de la vida”). También por la propia Doudna y Sternberg Samuel H. en “A Crack in Creation: Gene Editing and the Unthinkable Power to Control” (el título de la edición en español es: “Una grieta en la creación: CRISPR, la edición génica y el increíble poder de controlar la evolución”). Doudna y Charpentier recibieron el premio solo 8 años después de haber realizado el descubrimiento que motivó la decisión del comité Nobel. Roger Penrose había recibido, el día anterior, el premio, compartido, en física, por un descubrimiento sobre agujeros negros de hacía unos 50 años. Esto, en términos del otorgamiento de estos premios representa una velocidad muy superior a lo acostumbrado, lo que da cuenta de la importancia del descubrimiento, en el que ellas tuvieron un liderazgo destacado, junto a otros científicos.
